So it seems like it took us forever to get things in the ground, but you have to remember that we also germinate things either in our My First Organics seed starting kits, or plug trays.  Our nursery has a fair amount of 128 plug trays.  Corn being what it is requires a lot of plants to be planted in fair sized blocks or they won’t pollinate each other.  You’ll just end up with cobbs.  So I found a packet of organic corn that someone gave me last year and filled a tray and a half with organic soil.  I use a cement mixer to create my own personal mix, which I will go into how I do that in another post.

So we have our first planting of the year!  Over 150 corn plants from one seed packet.  I’ll follow up later this season to share the yield as well as care.

My biggest worries?

  • Our two dogs, who love freshly turned dirt that Daddy has made exclusively for their enjoyment.
  • Gophers.  There are probably hundreds of them in this field.  They breed at least twice a year and have as many as 5 offspring each time.  We will never be rid of them.
  • Birds.  Not as big a concern as the above, but they do like seedlings.  They are one of the reasons I prefer to start seeds and transplant them once they are up to size.
  • Irrigation.  This field doesn’t have a nearby power supply, otherwise I would set up an irrigation schedule on a timer – I’ll be thinking of a solution over the next week.
