Let's face it. Our kids are not getting enough of their fruits and vegetables. Neither are we. And it's a big problem.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued its first state-by-state report in September 2009. The results: NO U.S. state is meeting national objectives for consumption of two fruits and three vegetables a day.
What does that mean to us and our future generations? A sick population.
There is an epidemic of obesity in America caused by poor dietary patterns and sedentary lifestyles. In fact, 1 out of 3 kids in the US are considered overweight or obese.
Fruit and vegetable consumption plays an important role in the prevention of obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Research shows that good eating habits, such as consuming whole foods like fruits and vegetables, are established at an early age. And when practiced, these patterns stay with us throughout our lives.
So, how do we get kids to actually EAT their fruits and veggies? By educating them, and ourselves, in the process.
Welcome to My First Organics seed starting kits. It's our attempt to help parents, teachers and homeschoolers teach kids to enjoy their fruits and veggies.
Studies have shown that when kids have a hand in growing food, their understanding of it and its relationship to their health increases. Our kits are a hands-on activity that teaches Pre-Kindergarten kids to 3rd graders how to grow their own.
Our book, "How a Garden Saves the Earth", tells a story about Reed, who buys his fruits and vegetables from the supermarket, and Posey, who grows her own in the backyard. The tale talks about the different journeys of Reed and Posey's fruits and vegetables. It simplistically explains the benefits of growing your own, recycling and supporting local, sustainable agriculture. In other words, it's a science, nutrition and environmental lesson - all in one! The book is included when you purchase one of our bundled kits for the classroom or homeschooler.
